FUNAAB Staff Unity Games Continue With Indoor Competitions
The 2026 Staff Unity Games of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), have continued with the commencement of indoor competitions aimed at promoting staff interaction, wellness and unity across the university community.
The indoor games, which began on August 13, featured Chess, Badminton, Tennis, Squash, Volleyball, Ayo Ọlọ́pọn, Draughts and Ludo.
Speaking during the games, the Director of the Directorate of Sports and Wellness Centre, Dr Samuel Olabanji, expressed delight at the turnout of staff and spectators.
He said the Chess venue was filled with staff and spectators, while the venues for Ayo Ọlọ́pọn, Draughts and Ludo also attracted considerable attention.
Olabanji said the games provided staff with an opportunity to take a break from their academic and administrative responsibilities, relax and interact with colleagues.
He commended the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Babatunde Kehinde, for providing a platform for staff to engage in recreational activities and strengthen relationships.
According to him, the Staff Unity Games are not solely about competition but also promote recreation, social interaction, wellness and unity among members of the university community.
He added that the games had helped bridge hierarchical and administrative barriers by creating opportunities for senior and junior staff to interact freely.
Olabanji noted that the participation of professors and other senior staff alongside their colleagues demonstrated the unifying role of sports in building a stronger university community.
Meanwhile, football action continued with the quarter-finals producing several results.
The College of Physical Sciences defeated the College of Veterinary Medicine 2–1, while the Works and Services Unit defeated DUFARMS through a penalty shootout. Earlier, the Registry defeated the Bursary 2–0.
The Director said the football competition would continue with the semi-finals on Monday.
He disclosed that the Staff Unity Games would run for two weeks, while the date for the closing ceremony would be confirmed in consultation with the university management.
Olabanji said the Vice-Chancellor was expected to preside over the closing ceremony and present medals and certificates to deserving winners.
He urged staff to participate actively in the games and sustain the spirit of unity beyond the competition, stressing that the ultimate goal was to promote recreation, wellness, social interaction and a healthier and more productive workforce.
