Kyambogo University has officially dismissed its Guild President, Benjamin Akiso, after he was found guilty of violating several university regulations during recent student protests.
The dismissal, confirmed in a letter dated July 3, 2025, and signed by the Office of the Vice Chancellor, cited Akiso for breaching the peace, erecting roadblocks, and displaying insubordination towards university authorities. These actions were deemed to have contravened the Kyambogo University Students’ Regulations of 2003, as amended in 2016.
“After the hearing of the case, the Students Affairs and Welfare Committee’s findings are that you breached peace, mounted roadblocks and you were insubordinate to the University authority,” the letter stated.
The decision followed the 111th meeting of the University Council, held on June 27, 2025, where the council reviewed and approved the recommendations of the Students Affairs and Welfare Committee to expel Akiso from the university under Regulation 41.
Akiso, a fourth-year Special Needs Education student and vocal student leader, had spearheaded several demonstrations opposing the institution’s tuition policies. His activism gained national attention and support from opposition figures, notably Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, president of the National Unity Platform (NUP), who described the university’s action as politically motivated.
While the university has not released a public statement beyond the dismissal notice, Akiso’s supporters have condemned the decision and announced plans to appeal it, defending his right to peaceful protest and student advocacy.
