The University of Ilorin has reportedly withdrawn from the 2025 Nigeria University Games Association (NUGA) held at the University of Jos, Plateau State, over security concerns.
The news, which spread across social media on Thursday, came as a surprise to many students and sports enthusiasts, especially after the school’s strong performance at the Zone D Pre-NUGA Qualifiers hosted by Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti, from September 19 to 21, 2025.
Team Unilorin had earned qualifications in athletics, racket sports, combat sports, chess, and volleyball, raising hopes of a medal-winning outing at the national games.
In preparation for the event, the Students’ Union Sports Secretary, popularly known as Ola of Pharmacy, had earlier shared a checklist of essential items for athletes. However, the WhatsApp group created for updates on the games reportedly went silent on Tuesday, sparking rumours of the university’s withdrawal.
Efforts to reach the Students’ Union President, the University’s Sports Director, and the Corporate Affairs Unit for comments proved unsuccessful as of press time. The institution has also not released any official statement on its verified social media pages or website.
Meanwhile, Nigeria Education News correspondents in Jos confirmed that the University of Ilorin contingent has not been sighted at the venue since the arrival of participating schools began.
Further updates will be provided as more details emerge from the ongoing NUGA Games at the University of Jos.
