The Governor (Wali) of Al-Gezira State, Al-Tahir Ibrahim Al-Khair, has praised the World Food Programme (WFP) for its ongoing humanitarian and development work in the state.
Speaking during a Friday meeting with a WFP delegation led by Deputy International Director Alkar Kies, Al-Khair highlighted the crucial role humanitarian organisations play in service delivery, capacity-building, development programmes, and supporting increased agricultural production. He called for stronger coordination between aid agencies, the Humanitarian Aid Commission, the Ministry of Social Welfare and Development, national NGOs and community groups to ensure assistance reaches the most vulnerable.
WFP’s Kies expressed appreciation for the state government’s cooperation and announced that 1,222 schools will be included in the agency’s school feeding programme. He also outlined WFP’s continued support for water-harvesting initiatives and the rehabilitation of irrigation canals within the Gezira Scheme — efforts aimed at positioning Al-Gezira as a key food-producing hub for the wider region.
Kies added that WFP remains committed to programmes designed to boost agricultural output and strengthen local resilience.
