The Emir of Kano, Dr Muhammadu Sanusi, has taken a rare step back into the classroom after securing admission into a law programme at Northwest University, Kano.
An official letter dated January 12, 2026, confirmed that the traditional ruler has been granted special admission into the Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) Common Law and Sharia programme of the university. He will resume at Level 200 in the Faculty of Law, effective from the 2024/2025 academic session.
The approval, conveyed by the university’s Directorate of Examinations, Admissions and Records and signed by its head, Jafaru Muhammad, on behalf of the Registrar, followed a formal application by the Emir and his satisfaction of the institution’s requirements for special consideration.
The letter, which was shared publicly by former presidential aide Bashir Ahmad on X, stated that the admission is subject to the Emir’s compliance with the university’s rules and regulations as contained in its Student Handbook.
It also directed him to complete registration by reporting to relevant units of the institution, including the admissions directorate, ICT unit, bursary department, faculty and departmental offices, university library, and the student affairs division.
Northwest University, Kano, is a state-owned tertiary institution offering undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in law, sciences, humanities and social sciences.
For many observers, the development reflects the Emir’s enduring commitment to learning and scholarship, reinforcing the idea that education remains a lifelong pursuit — regardless of age, status or title.
