The Government of The Gambia has approved a new Language in Education Policy (2025–2030), marking a major shift towards inclusive and learner-centred education.
The policy, endorsed by Cabinet and announced by the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, prioritises the use of learners’ first language in early-grade instruction, recognising language as a critical foundation for effective learning and social integration.
Under the new framework, several national languages—including Jola, Soninke, Mandinka, Manjaku, Pulaar, Olof and Sereer—will be formally adopted as mediums of instruction in schools. The move is expected to improve literacy and numeracy outcomes, reduce dropout rates, and strengthen foundational learning among young pupils.
The policy also provides formal recognition for Gambian Sign Language, ensuring greater access to education for deaf and hard-of-hearing learners. Officials say this reinforces the government’s commitment to equity and inclusive education.
Speaking on the development, Minister of Basic and Secondary Education, Habibatou Drammeh, described the policy as a transformative step that aligns with national development goals and global education standards.
She expressed appreciation to Adama Barrow, development partners, education stakeholders and community members who contributed to the formulation of the policy.
Education experts note that global research consistently supports mother-tongue instruction, particularly in early education, as it enhances comprehension, builds confidence and improves academic performance.
The policy also aligns with international frameworks such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4 on quality education and the African Union’s Continental Education Strategy for Africa.
With its implementation, the Gambian government aims to promote culturally relevant teaching, strengthen multilingual education, and ensure that no child is left behind in the country’s education system.
