South Africa’s Department of Basic Education has warned the public against fraudulent social media posts advertising “Teacher Assistants Phase 6” recruitment for 2026.
The scam adverts, circulating mainly on Facebook, falsely claim that applications for teacher assistant positions are now open. The posts target unemployed youths between the ages of 18 and 35, promising monthly stipends and requiring applicants to possess qualifications ranging from Grade 9 to Grade 12.
Authorities say the adverts contain several red flags, including vague information about the application process, suspicious links filled with pop-up advertisements, and repeated requests for users to share the posts widely.
The Department of Basic Education officially dismissed the claims, describing them as fraudulent. On its verified social media platforms, the department stamped the circulating graphics with a bold “SCAM ALERT” warning and clarified that no official announcement has been made regarding teacher assistant recruitment for 2026.
The department advised citizens not to submit personal information or make payments through unofficial websites or advertisements. It stressed that all legitimate recruitment updates would only be communicated through verified government platforms and official department channels.
Authorities also urged job seekers to remain cautious of online scams by verifying opportunities through official sources, avoiding requests for payment, and refusing to share sensitive personal or banking details with unverified platforms.
The warning comes amid increasing cases of online employment scams targeting desperate job seekers across South Africa.
