The Federal Government of Nigeria has scheduled the 2025 Commonwealth Day celebrations for Monday, 10th March, with a focus on fostering unity, peace, and collaboration among member nations.
Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, the Minister of Education, Dr Adetunji Alausa, announced this year’s theme: “Together We Thrive.” He emphasised the resilience and commitment of the 56 Commonwealth nations in promoting peace and prosperity.
Planned Activities
The Ministry of Education has directed all state ministries and Universal Basic Education Boards to ensure that primary and secondary schools across the country observe the day. Additionally, a series of activities have been planned to engage students in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in an interactive and educational manner.
Currently, students from selected schools within the FCT are participating in a dress rehearsal for the Parade of Commonwealth Nations Flags. This ceremonial procession will showcase students in national flags and cultural attire, symbolising unity, diversity, and cooperation among Commonwealth nations.
Other planned activities include:
Creative Performances: Schools have been tasked with guiding students in composing poetry, drama, and dance performances centred on the theme “Together We Thrive.” The top three entries in each category will be showcased on Commonwealth Day, with winners receiving special recognition for their ingenuity.
Youth Lecture: A lecture has been organised to enlighten young people on their role in building a better future through unity, peace, and cross-cultural collaboration.
Diplomatic Engagements
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has invited diplomats from Commonwealth member states based in Abuja to witness the creative presentations by students. Dr Alausa highlighted that the annual Commonwealth Day commemoration aims to amplify voices for collaborative learning, which fosters knowledge, innovation, and sustainable development.
Call for Media Coverage
Dr Alausa urged journalists to provide extensive and objective coverage of the celebrations, ensuring accurate dissemination of information about the Commonwealth of Nations and its core values of peace, unity, and collaboration.
Conclusion
As Nigeria joins the global community in commemorating Commonwealth Day, the planned activities are expected to inspire a sense of belonging among students while reinforcing the importance of international cooperation for sustainable development.
