Former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has expressed deep gratitude and pride after being conferred with the Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The experienced defender revealed that he received his official national honour certificate today, a day after the announcement was made, describing the recognition as a defining and emotional moment for both himself and his family.
I am truly honoured and grateful to His Excellency, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, for bestowing on me the MFR national honour.
Receiving the official certificate today makes it even more special. It is a very proud moment for me and my family to be recognised in this way,” Troost-Ekong said.
Reflecting on his journey with the national team, the AFCON silver-medalist highlighted Nigeria’s profound impact on his life and career, stressing that representing the country shaped his identity and purpose.
Nigeria gave me my identity, my purpose, and the platform to live out my dream through football.
Wearing the green and white has always meant responsibility, privilege, and a lifelong promise to give everything for the badge and for our people,” he added.
Troost-Ekong also turned his attention to the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations, sending a message of encouragement to the current Super Eagles squad as they begin their campaign.
As our Super Eagles kick off their AFCON journey today, I wish the team every success. As I promised, I’ll be supporting them all the way.
I believe in this group, I believe in our nation, and I believe in what we can achieve together,” he stated.
He concluded with a powerful affirmation of national pride:
“I am, and will always be, proud to be Nigerian.” 🇳🇬
