Malawian master of ceremony Chris Loka has launched a project to renovate classrooms at his former school, Chilaweni Community Day Secondary School, located in the area of Traditional Authority Machinjiri in Blantyre, Malawi.
Loka, who studied at the school between 2004 and 2008, initiated the renovation through his organisation, Mupacho Initiative, which focuses on inspiring secondary school students and mobilising resources to support disadvantaged learners. He said he decided to intervene after observing the deteriorating condition of classrooms, particularly the badly damaged floors.
Speaking during the handover of building materials at the school, Loka described the state of the classrooms as disheartening, noting that he once studied in the same facilities. He said the school played an important role in shaping his personal and professional journey, motivating him to give back.
Deputy headteacher Maggie Mwalabu praised the initiative, describing it as a commendable gesture from an alumnus who had returned to support his former school. She said Loka’s action demonstrated the importance of remembering one’s roots and supporting community development.
Students at the school also welcomed the project. Form Two student Titus Chibaba said learners had been studying in dusty classrooms due to damaged floors, which often caused flu and coughing among students. He expressed appreciation to Loka for helping improve the learning environment and inspiring current students through his example.
