After nearly a decade without active unionism, students at the University of Lagos are getting their voice back.
The institution has officially reinstated its Students’ Union, swearing in new leaders in what marks a major shift in student representation on campus.

The ceremony, held on March 24, 2026, at the Tayo Aderinokun Hall in Akoka, was led by Vice-Chancellor, Folasade Ogunsola, who described the moment as a return to responsible student leadership.
For many students, this move ends a long pause that began in 2016 when union activities were suspended following violent protests that disrupted academic life.
Now, the university says it is taking a gradual approach to rebuilding the system.
Dean of Students’ Affairs, Johnson Agunsoye, explained that this inauguration is just the first phase, with plans to fully restore the Students’ Union Executive Council and Students’ Parliament by the 2026/2027 session.
To support the new leadership, the university approved a ₦5 million take-off grant, provided temporary office space, and refurbished an 18-seater bus for union activities.
Addressing the newly elected leaders, Ogunsola urged them to see their positions as a call to service, stressing the need for discipline, dialogue, and constructive engagement.
Also speaking, Sabo Divisional Police Officer, CSP Comfort Alabi, advised the students to promote peace and avoid social vices.
On behalf of the new executives, President Akinpelu Bolaji described the moment as “a new beginning,” unveiling what he called the “Renaissance Administration” — a leadership aimed at being more responsive and purposeful.
The oath of office was administered by Barrister Risqiat Usman, followed by the presentation of the Staff of Office to the new president.
