The University of Lagos has taken a step toward improving medical students’ living conditions with plans to build a new 170-bed-space hostel at its College of Medicine, Idi-Araba.
The project officially kicked off on April 1, 2026, with the handover of the construction site to Colton Construction Limited.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor, Folasade T. Ogunsola, described the development as a strategic move to strengthen infrastructure for training medical professionals.
She raised concerns about the growing number of Nigerian-trained doctors leaving the country, stressing the need for institutions to expand capacity and produce more qualified graduates.
According to her, the new hostel will improve student accommodation and support the university’s goal of training up to 1,000 medical doctors annually.
The project is being supported by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), which has continued to fund high-impact projects across tertiary institutions.
Also speaking, the Director of Colton Construction Limited, Dr. Anthony Ajulo, assured that the project would be delivered according to approved standards within a 24-month timeline.
Earlier, the Provost of the College of Medicine, Ademola Oremosu, said the hostel is part of TETFund’s Special High Impact Projects and will enhance facilities for training future doctors.
The ceremony ended with the signing of documents, marking the official commencement of construction.
