The Nigerian Education Loan Fund has condemned what it described as unethical practices by some tertiary institutions, including delays in refunding students whose tuition fees had already been paid before NELFUND disbursements and arbitrary increases in tuition and other institutional charges.
In a statement, the agency said such actions undermine the objective of the Student Loan Scheme, which was introduced by the administration of President Bola Tinubu to remove financial barriers to higher education.
According to NELFUND, the scheme was designed to ease students’ access to tertiary education and should not become a source of additional financial burden.
The agency disclosed that it is engaging the affected institutions and relevant authorities to ensure that eligible students receive refunds where necessary and that institutional charges remain fair, transparent and consistent with the objectives of the scheme.
NELFUND reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the interests of students and preserving the integrity of the student loan programme, describing it as a landmark national intervention aimed at expanding access to higher education
