As classrooms become increasingly technology-driven, the Sa’adatu Rimi Federal College of Education, Kano, says future teachers must be trained with digital skills that prepare them for modern learning environments.
The college believes technology and virtual learning platforms can improve the quality of teacher education, give trainees access to global expertise and make learning more flexible.
This was the focus of an international virtual learning programme hosted by the institution, where Dr Donna Stallings, a former professor at Lincoln University, Jefferson City, Missouri, United States, delivered a certificate training session remotely.
Speaking during the programme, the Provost of the college, Kabiru Gwarzo, expressed support for the virtual learning model, saying the institution is positioning itself to drive digital-based teacher education in Nigeria.
The initiative was organised through the Electronic Education Initiative.
Its Founder and National Programme Coordinator, Idonuagbe Akogun, thanked participants for embracing the vision of transforming teacher education through digital innovation and international collaboration.
According to Akogun, the programme shows how technology can remove geographical barriers, allowing Nigerian lecturers and teacher trainees to learn from international experts without the cost of travelling abroad.
He said the development reflects the growing role of technology in improving teaching quality, supporting professional development and expanding access to global knowledge.
“For the first time in the history of the Nigerian Colleges of Education system, an international virtual certificate training class is being delivered directly to a College of Education by an accomplished global educator,” Akogun said.
He added that teacher-training institutions must make digital learning a central part of their programmes to prepare educators for today’s classrooms.
“Colleges of Education must reposition themselves to integrate digital pedagogy into their training frameworks if they are to produce teachers equipped for 21st-century classrooms,” he said.
