Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called on all Nigerians to register and obtain a National Identity Number (NIN), stressing that accurate population data is essential for effective national planning and improved service delivery.
In a statement issued on Saturday to commemorate World Population Day 2026, the First Lady said comprehensive population data would enable the government to plan more efficiently and provide essential services for the country’s growing population.
She also reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to building a future where every citizen, particularly women and young people, has access to quality healthcare, education, and opportunities to realise their full potential.
According to her, as Nigeria’s population continues to expand, greater investment must be made in the country’s greatest asset—its people.
Mrs Tinubu noted that collective action by government, institutions, communities, and citizens would help empower families, improve access to healthcare, support young people, and drive sustainable national development.
She urged Nigerians to participate in the National Identity Management system by registering for their NIN, describing it as a vital step towards generating reliable population data that would support evidence-based policies and inclusive development.
World Population Day is observed annually on July 11 to raise awareness about global population issues, including reproductive health, gender equality, poverty, and sustainable development.
