DefendDefenders, Front Line Defenders, and the International Service for Human Rights (ISHR) have announced a call for applications for an in-person training designed to strengthen the capacity of African human rights defenders. The training aims to equip participants with the knowledge and practical skills needed to strategically engage with the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) and integrate its mechanisms into their national advocacy work.
Scheduled to take place from 15–21 October 2026 in Dakar, Senegal (exact dates to be confirmed), the programme will include two mandatory online preparatory sessions, followed by two and a half days of intensive in-person training. Participants will also attend the NGO Forum organised by the African Centre for Democracy and Human Rights Studies (ACDHRS) and observe the opening of the ACHPR’s 89th Ordinary Session.Multilateral Organizations
The training will provide participants with in-depth understanding of the ACHPR’s work and mechanisms, including state reporting procedures, special rapporteurs, communications, and country visits. Through practical sessions and case studies, participants will strengthen their advocacy skills and learn how to effectively engage policymakers and stakeholders to drive change at the national level. The programme also offers a valuable networking opportunity with human rights defenders from across Africa.
The training will be conducted in English and French, with simultaneous interpretation available.
Eligibility Criteria:
The programme is open to experienced African human rights defenders, civil society actors, and representatives of organisations working on human rights issues in Africa. Applicants must have at least five years of advocacy experience at the national level and demonstrate interest in engaging with regional human rights mechanisms. Priority will be given to candidates from selected African countries, including Nigeria.
Coverage:
Selected participants will have their travel, accommodation, and feeding costs fully covered. However, due to limited funding, only about 11 participants will be selected, and applicants are encouraged to seek additional sponsorship if possible.
