Erstwhile Editor of the National Association of Mass Communication Students (NAMACOS) Editorial Board, Fellow of the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism, and News Editor at Edutimes Africa, Folaranmi Ajayi popularly known as Enigma has paid glowing tribute to veteran journalist, media scholar and public relations practitioner, High Chief Dr. Olutope Abiola, as he marks his birthday.
Ajayi described Dr. Abiola as the embodiment of journalism excellence, commending his mastery of language, ethical standards and unwavering commitment to protecting the integrity of institutions.
According to him, Dr. Abiola has remained a distinguished journalist, an exceptional media lecturer and a mentor whose influence continues to shape generations of communication professionals.
Reflecting on their relationship, Ajayi recalled that as a student he frequently disagreed with Dr. Abiola because of his activism and fearless approach to journalism. Despite their differences, he said the veteran journalist never stopped mentoring and encouraging him.
“Looking back now, I appreciate those moments even more because they shaped my thinking and strengthened my resolve to pursue journalism with courage and responsibility,” he said.
Ajayi also remembered a defining moment during one of Dr. Abiola’s classes when he answered a difficult grammar question and received words of encouragement that boosted his confidence.
“I can never forget the day you commended me in class. Those few words of encouragement became a source of motivation that has stayed with me throughout my academic and professional journey,” he said.
He noted that their relationship has since grown into one founded on mutual respect, revealing that he regularly consults Dr. Abiola to clarify issues and verify facts while working on stories.
“We still argue a lot, but I have come to realise one thing—Baba na master. His wealth of knowledge and experience is undeniable,” Ajayi said.
He further praised Dr. Abiola for his commitment to mentoring young journalists, recalling a recent occasion when the media scholar commended a story approved by him and gave the reporter unrestricted access to seek professional guidance.
Ajayi also congratulated Dr. Abiola on recently attaining his doctoral degree, describing it as a well-deserved recognition of his contributions to journalism, public relations and media education.
He prayed for God’s continued blessings upon the veteran journalist, wishing him many more years of sound health, wisdom, fulfilment and greater accomplishments.
“Happy birthday, Dr. Tope Abiola. Thank you for your mentorship, your sacrifices and your unwavering commitment to raising generations of journalists. Your impact extends far beyond the classroom, and your legacy will continue to inspire generations to come,” Ajayi said.
