Foreign Secretary David Lammy began a visit to Nigeria and South Africa on November 3, marking his first official trip to the African continent since taking office and the first UK Foreign Secretary visit to South Africa since 2013.
The visit underscores the UK government’s focus on growth, as Lammy emphasized economic collaboration and climate action as central to UK-Africa partnerships.
“Our new approach will deliver respectful partnerships that listen rather than tell, deliver long term growth rather than short term solutions, and build a freer, safer, more prosperous continent,” Lammy stated, highlighting Africa’s potential for economic growth and the UK’s commitment to fostering mutual growth through partnerships with African nations.
In Nigeria, Lammy signed a “modern and progressive Strategic Partnership” with Nigerian leaders to enhance UK-Nigeria cooperation in areas like economic growth, security, and climate initiatives.
He also discussed the UK-Nigeria Enhanced Trade and Investment Partnership with President Bola Tinubu, Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar, and Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, reiterating the UK’s support for Nigeria’s economic modernization through a Technical Assistance package, which will provide expertise from British institutions like the Bank of England and HMRC.
Lammy’s agenda will extend to South Africa, where he will finalize a UK-South Africa Growth Plan aimed at expanding trade opportunities and supporting South African agricultural jobs, among other initiatives.
Additionally, he will renew the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with South Africa, covering trade, energy transition, and security.
“Growth is the core mission of this government and will underpin our relationships in Nigeria, South Africa, and beyond,” Lammy affirmed, pledging that these partnerships will benefit both British and African economies.
Lammy’s visit includes participation in the Earthshot+ event in Cape Town, showcasing climate innovation and environmental action.
He will meet with South African leaders to discuss green growth and will announce support for biodiversity and climate resilience initiatives.
