The National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority (NaFAA) has officially transferred the World Bank-funded Fisheries College and Regional Center of Excellence to the University of Liberia (UL). The handover ceremony marks a significant milestone in strengthening Liberia’s fisheries education and research capabilities.
The college, constructed under the West Africa Regional Fisheries Program (WARFP) and funded by the World Bank, aims to enhance human capacity development in fisheries and aquaculture. It is expected to provide advanced training and research opportunities for students and professionals in the sector.
Speaking at the handover event, NaFAA’s Director-General, Emma Metieh Glassco, highlighted the importance of the facility in fostering sustainable fisheries management and promoting economic growth through the sector. She noted that the partnership with UL will ensure the effective utilization of the institution for academic and technical training.
University of Liberia President, Dr. Julius S. Nelson Jr., expressed gratitude for the transfer, emphasizing the university’s commitment to providing quality education and research in fisheries science. He assured that the facility would be integrated into UL’s academic programs to benefit students and contribute to national development.
The newly transferred Fisheries College is expected to serve as a hub for training professionals in fisheries management, marine science, and aquaculture. Additionally, the institution will collaborate with local and international partners to promote sustainable fishing practices and resource conservation.
With this development, Liberia moves closer to becoming a leader in fisheries education and research within the West African region, ensuring long-term benefits for the nation’s marine resources and economy.
