Liverpool have dismissed head coach Arne Slot, bringing an end to his two-year spell at Anfield despite leading the club to the Premier League title in his first season.
The club announced the decision on Saturday, describing it as a difficult but necessary step following a review of a disappointing 2025/26 campaign. Although Liverpool secured Champions League qualification on the final day of the season, the team suffered 19 defeats across all competitions and struggled to replicate the form that delivered the league title a year earlier.
In a statement, Liverpool praised Slot’s contribution, professionalism and leadership, particularly his role in guiding the club through the tragic death of forward Diogo Jota. The club, however, said a change in direction was required to ensure future progress.
“Arne leaves with our gratitude, with a Premier League title to his name, and with the knowledge that he and his family will always be welcomed back at Anfield,” the statement read.
Slot, 47, succeeded Jürgen Klopp and enjoyed immediate success by guiding Liverpool to a record-equalling 20th English league title. However, despite significant investment in new players, the team’s performances declined during the recently concluded season, leading to growing dissatisfaction among supporters.
Liverpool are now expected to move quickly in appointing a successor. Former Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola has emerged as one of the leading candidates for the role. The Spaniard is currently available after leaving Bournemouth at the end of the season and is also attracting interest from several European clubs.
Slot’s departure marks a significant turning point for Liverpool as the club seeks to rebuild and challenge once again for major honours under new leadership.
