The Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, FUTA, Professor Adenike Oladiji has admonished the newly elected leaders of the students’ union of the institution to always allow fairness and equity guide whatever decisions and actions they want to take. She stated this at the inauguration and swearing in ceremony of the new executives held at the T. I. Francis auditorium of the institution on Thursday 21st May, 2026.
Professor Oladiji said to the leaders “you must recognize that you represent a diverse and dynamic student population. Therefore, inclusiveness, fairness, and equity must guide your decisions and actions. Be accessible to your colleagues. Listen attentively to their concerns and ensure that no group feels marginalized. True leadership is measured by your ability to unite people, build consensus, and foster a sense of belonging.”
Speaking further, she said “I strongly admonish you to always present issues to management objectively and responsibly. Avoid sensationalism, misinformation, or actions that may incite unrest. Instead, embrace dialogue and evidence-based advocacy. I would advise that you develop a solution-oriented mindset on issues. Remember that lasting progress is achieved not through confrontation, but through consultation and collaboration. I encourage you to uphold and promote the core values of this great University: excellence, innovation, discipline, and character. Your conduct, both within and outside the campus, should reflect the ideals of FUTA. You are not only representatives of the student body but also ambassadors of this institution. Let your words, actions, and decisions bring honour and dignity to the university.”
The Vice Chancellor also urged the entire students to support their leaders for a smooth and hitch free tenure and academic session. She said “to the general student body, I urge you to support your leaders and engage constructively with them. Leadership is a shared responsibility, and the success of this new administration depends not only on those in office, but also on cooperation and participation of all students. Let us continue to maintain the peace, unity, and academic excellence for which FUTA is known.”
She promised the commitment of her administration to the well-being of the students. “As an institution, we remain committed to creating and enabling environment that supports your academic pursuits, personal development, and leadership growth. We will continue to partner with you in building a University community that is safe, inclusive, progressive, and globally competitive.”
In an opening remarks, the Dean, Students Affairs Division, Professor Olanrewaju Oke urged the new leaders not to see their emergence as a mere victory, but as a responsibility entrusted to them by fellow students. He called on them to lead with humility, fairness, integrity and a strong sense of accountability. He said “leadership is not about power, bossing around, but service. You are expected to be the bridge builders between the students and the University authorities. To excel and shine in this noble assignment, you need to always listen attentively, communicate effectively and act responsibly. Avoid actions that may disrupt the peace and academic stability of the university. You must recognize that leadership always have its challenges. There will be moments of disagreement and pressure in taking soft and difficult decisions. At such moments, let wisdom guide you. Let fairness and integrity be the hall mark of your leadership. You are now ambassadors of unity, responsibility, and catalysts of progress. Your actions, decisions, and attitudes will not only shape your tenure, but also the experience of both staff and students.”
Handing over the leadership to the new executives, the immediate past president, Pelemo Desmond said “do not anyone deceive you that you must know everything before you step into leadership. You grow into responsibility. You learn through service. Leadership is not about arriving with all answers, it is about having the courage to begin, the humility to learn, and the resilience to continue.”
He encouraged his successor to be bold, humble and mature in leading. “be bold enough to stand when necessary. Be humble enough to listen when corrected. Be accessible to the students. Be accountable with power and never forget the essence of this office: service. The Union you inherit today is stronger than it was yesterday. Carry the torch with dignity. Let the flame burn brighter, and know that those gone before you are rooting for your success. Be rest assured of our support whenever needed.”
Pelemo expressed his gratitude to the Vice Chancellor and her team for guidance, patience, corrections, and support throughout his tenure.
In his acceptance speech, the new President, Akomolafe Ramson promised to lead with the fear of God, not undermining the integrity of the University and obeying the leadership of the institution.
