A moment meant to test knowledge turned tragic at Obafemi Awolowo University, leaving the campus community in shock.
The university has announced the death of Oreoluwa Emmanuel Adewole, a Part IV student in its College of Health Sciences.
According to a statement issued on Thursday by the institution’s spokesperson, Abiodun Olarewaju, the incident occurred during a clinical viva examination.
Adewole reportedly complained of chest pain while the examination was ongoing.
He was immediately attended to by lecturers and fellow medical students present at the scene.
Despite prompt medical attention and efforts to revive him, the student was confirmed dead.
“This tragic loss has sent shockwaves through the university community,” the statement noted.
Reacting to the development, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Simeon Bamire, expressed condolences on behalf of the Governing Council, Senate, staff, and students.
He extended sympathies to the parents, siblings, and family of the deceased, as well as to his friends and colleagues in the College of Health Sciences.
The university said it is currently engaging with relevant authorities and the family to provide support and better understand the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The loss has left a sombre mood within the institution, as students and staff reflect on the sudden passing of one of their own.
