Oyo School Abduction: Eight Kidnappers Arrested, Others Killed as Security Agencies Rescue All Pupils, Teacher
The Presidency has confirmed that eight suspected kidnappers involved in the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State have been arrested, while several others were killed during a security operation that secured the victims’ freedom after 56 days in captivity.
Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, disclosed the development in an update shared on his verified X handle on Friday.
According to him, the eight suspects are currently in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS), while other members of the kidnapping gang were neutralised during the rescue operation.
«”Updated: In the course of the rescue operation, eight of the kidnappers were arrested and are now in DSS custody, while some of them were neutralised,” Onanuga stated.»
He also dismissed reports suggesting that the government negotiated with the kidnappers, stressing that no ransom or concession was made to secure the release of the victims.
«”There was no quid pro quo in the rescue as one of the terrorists, a kingpin, that the kidnappers demanded his release, is being prosecuted for his atrocities. The security agencies will give a full account soon,” he added.»
The pupils and teachers were abducted on May 15 when armed men attacked three schools in the Esiele and Yawota communities of Oriire Local Government Area, disrupting academic activities and raising fresh concerns over the safety of schools in Oyo State.
The attack claimed the life of one teacher, while another was reportedly beheaded during captivity, triggering nationwide outrage and renewed calls for stronger security measures to protect schools, learners and education workers.
With the successful rescue of all the abducted pupils and teachers, parents, educators and education stakeholders have expressed relief, while awaiting a detailed briefing from security agencies on how the operation was carried out.
