The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has announced a ₦50 million support package for families affected by the recent abduction of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
Akpabio made the announcement during Wednesday’s plenary, stating that the intervention is intended to provide relief to families who lost loved ones during the incident.
Under the package, ₦10 million each will be given to the families of three security personnel who were killed during the rescue operation, as well as the families of two teachers murdered by the abductors while in captivity.
The Senate President said the financial assistance forms part of the National Assembly’s response to the tragedy, while reaffirming support for ongoing security operations to rescue other kidnapping victims across the country.
During the debate, Senator Abdul Ningi urged the Senate to ensure that compensation is extended to all victims affected by the attack, warning against selective support.
He argued that every citizen who suffered losses as a result of the incident deserves equal treatment, calling for a more inclusive compensation framework for victims of insecurity.
The Oriire abduction, which shocked the nation, claimed the lives of two teachers and three security operatives before the remaining pupils and teachers were rescued in a joint operation by Nigerian security agencies.
