The Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), has addressed concerns surrounding the admission status of Jamiu Basola, a graduate of the Department of Civil Engineering, stating that the matter now lies with the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
In a statement signed by the institution’s Director of Corporate Communications, Mr Adegbenro Adebanjo, FUTA confirmed that Basola was admitted into the Department of Civil Engineering during the 2017/2018 academic session after passing the 2017 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) conducted by JAMB. He successfully completed the five-year programme.
However, while preparing for mobilisation for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Basola discovered that his admission had been flagged as “fake” by JAMB. Following this development, he contacted the examination body and was informed that the matter required investigation by the Nigeria Police.
According to FUTA, the university was subsequently invited by the Police to provide all relevant documentation related to Basola’s admission. After scrutinising the documents, the Police submitted a report to JAMB Headquarters for further action.
In an extraordinary move, the university also sent a formal reminder to JAMB to expedite action on the matter.
“FUTA has discharged its responsibility on the matter on behalf of Jamiu Basola and awaits JAMB, which flagged his status in the first place, to resolve the issue based on the documents and information supplied by the University,” the statement reads.
With the investigation concluded and the university’s input provided, FUTA says the resolution now rests with JAMB.
