The Lagos State University (LASU) has indefinitely suspended its second-semester examinations for the 2024/2025 academic session, alongside all academic and socio-academic activities, due to an escalating industrial action by staff unions.
The decision, reached during an emergency virtual Senate meeting held on Saturday, August 2, was announced in an official statement by Mrs. Oluwayemisi Thomas-Onashile, Deputy Registrar and Coordinator of LASU’s Centre for Information and Public Relations.
The university’s Senate noted that the suspension was a direct response to the ongoing strike declared by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) comprising LASU chapters of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT).
Originally, LASU’s 2024/2025 second-semester examinations were scheduled to commence on Monday, August 4. However, the strike action—primarily targeted at the Lagos State Government rather than the university management—has forced a total halt to scheduled academic operations.
The university management emphasized that efforts had been made to mediate between the striking unions and the state government. A high-level peace meeting chaired by the Lagos State Head of Service, Mr. Olabode Agoro, was held on Friday, August 1, with representatives from the university, unions, and relevant government ministries in attendance. It was agreed that discussions would resume on Thursday, August 7, in a bid to resolve the impasse.
As part of the Senate’s directive, all students residing in LASU hostels were ordered to vacate the premises by 6:00 a.m. on Monday, August 4. The management urged students and members of the university community to remain calm and law-abiding during this period of uncertainty.
The Vice-Chancellor, who also chairs the Senate, reiterated the institution’s commitment to restoring normalcy and ensuring minimal disruption to students’ academic progress.
