The University of Lagos (UNILAG) community is mourning the death of Damilola Balogun, a Faculty of Education student who drowned after attempting a backflip at Eleko Beach, Lagos.
How the Incident Happened
The accident occurred on September 18 or 19, 2025 — reports differ on the exact date.
Witnesses said Damilola asked a friend to record him performing a stunt.
A strong wave swept him away before help could reach him.
His body was later recovered at Museyo Beach in Ibeju-Lekki, about two kilometres away, according to first responders.
Reactions
Friends and classmates have flooded social media with tributes, describing him as “full of life.”
Damilola had recently been elected President of his faculty, after serving as Vice President.
UNILAG’s Director of Communications, Mrs Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, confirmed the tragedy and said Vice Chancellor Prof. Folasade Ogunsola has commiserated with his family.
> “The Vice-Chancellor, on behalf of the entire University community, prays that God grants the bereaved family strength and fortitude to bear the irreplaceable loss,” UNILAG said in a statement.
Why This Story Matters
Incidents of drowning at Nigerian beaches are not uncommon, often linked to:
Strong, unpredictable waves.
Lack of lifeguards or proper safety enforcement.
Risk-taking behaviour, especially among young people.
The tragedy highlights the urgent need for stronger water safety education, especially for students and youth groups who frequent beaches.
The Bigger Picture
Damilola’s death is more than just a campus tragedy; it underscores the dangers of recreational risks near open water. His loss has raised conversations within UNILAG and beyond about:
Beach safety regulations.
Emergency response systems.
The importance of peer caution during outings.
