The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has received a donation of solar-powered streetlights and poles from Felicity Solar Nigeria Limited, reinforcing its commitment to renewable energy and campus safety.
The donation, which was formally handed over on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, was facilitated by the UNILAG Energy Club, a student-led organisation that served as the link between the institution and the private sector. The initiative underscores the growing role of students as catalysts for infrastructural and sustainability-driven change within the university community.
Representatives of Felicity Solar Nigeria Limited, led by its Director of Digital Marketing, Mr Frankie Duan, were received by members of the university’s management team, including the Vice-Chancellor’s representative and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and Research), Professor Bola Oboh; the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Management Services), Professor Muyiwa Falaiye, FNAL; and the Director of the Quality Assurance and SERVICOM Unit, Professor Olufemi Saibu.
Speaking on the intervention, Professor Falaiye explained that the solar streetlights are aimed at improving campus security, enhancing night-time visibility for students and staff, and supporting UNILAG’s green energy agenda. He described the donation as timely and critical, noting that poorly lit areas such as Akinpelu Road, Alvan Ikoku Road, the Ransome-Kuti axis, International School/Honours Hostel corridor, and the High-Rise residential area would significantly benefit from the project.
He also commended members of the UNILAG Energy Club for their proactive engagement and commitment, which ensured the successful delivery of the initiative.
In her remarks, Professor Oboh expressed the university’s appreciation to Felicity Solar Nigeria Limited for addressing a key infrastructural challenge. She noted that the donation aligns with UNILAG’s renewable energy objectives and offers practical relief amid ongoing electricity supply constraints.
On behalf of the donor company, Mr Duan reaffirmed Felicity Solar Nigeria Limited’s commitment to promoting safer and better-lit educational environments. He disclosed that beyond the donation and installation of the solar-powered streetlights and poles, the company would provide sustained maintenance and technical support to ensure optimal performance.
The UNILAG Energy Club is a multidisciplinary student organisation focused on shaping Africa’s energy future by bridging the gap between academic learning and real-world energy practice. The club operates through three core divisions: the Technology Division, which focuses on renewable energy systems and sustainability; the Finance Division, which explores energy economics and sustainable financing; and the Legal Division, which engages with energy policy, regulation, and law.
