West Ham United held Manchester City to a 1–1 draw at the London Stadium on Saturday night, dealing a major blow to City’s Premier League title hopes.
The result leaves the defending champions nine points behind league leaders Arsenal, although City still have a game in hand. For West Ham, the hard-fought point was crucial as it lifted them out of the relegation zone for the first time since December.
City dominated possession for most of the match but struggled to convert their chances. The breakthrough eventually came in the 30th minute when Bernardo Silva’s mishit cross looped over West Ham goalkeeper Mads Hermansen to give the visitors the lead.
However, West Ham responded just four minutes later. A corner delivered by Jarrod Bowen caused confusion in City’s defence, with goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma failing to deal with the ball. Konstantinos Mavropanos capitalised, heading home the equaliser that ultimately secured a valuable point for the hosts.
Despite dominating the game, City could not find a winning goal. Erling Haaland endured a frustrating evening, missing several chances that might have sealed victory for the visitors.
City manager Pep Guardiola, who watched the match from the stands due to suspension, admitted his side missed their star striker’s finishing touch but insisted the title race is not yet over.
“It’s not over because we didn’t lose,” Guardiola said after the match, while acknowledging that his team must improve their attacking threat in the remaining games.
West Ham manager Nuno Espírito Santo praised his players for their determination, noting that the team had to “suffer” to secure the result against one of the league’s strongest sides.
With Arsenal continuing their strong run at the top, City now face a difficult task if they hope to retain the Premier League title. Meanwhile, West Ham will take confidence from a result that boosts their fight for survival.
