The Osun State University, Osogbo, has charged its newly admitted postgraduate students to focus on research that addresses real-life challenges facing Nigerian society.
The Vice-Chancellor, Clement Adebooye, gave the charge on Wednesday during the institution’s 11th postgraduate matriculation ceremony, where students formally took their oath of admission.
Speaking at the event, Adebooye urged the students to remain focused, resilient, and purposeful throughout their academic journey, noting that postgraduate education demands discipline and commitment.
He emphasised that while the university provides a supportive learning environment, experienced faculty, and academic resources, students must take responsibility for their success.
“Avoid all forms of academic misconduct. Uphold the highest standards of scholarship. Let your work speak for you,” he said.
The Vice-Chancellor further stressed that postgraduate studies go beyond acquiring certificates, urging students to become solution providers.
“The world today is in dire need of innovative thinkers, problem solvers, and ethical leaders. Let your research address real societal challenges and transform communities,” he added.
Providing insights into the admission process, Adebooye disclosed that out of over 1,100 applicants, only 801 candidates were offered admission, reflecting the competitive nature of the programmes.
He noted that 707 candidates had collected their admission letters, while 678 had completed their registration by paying acceptance fees.
“You are not just students; you are a select group admitted on merit and entrusted with upholding the academic excellence of this university,” he said.
Adebooye also highlighted the institution’s growth, describing it as one of the fastest-growing universities in Nigeria, with a stable and uninterrupted academic calendar as one of its defining features.
Established by the Osun State Government under the administration of Olagunsoye Oyinlola, the multi-campus university held its first convocation ceremony in 2011 during the tenure of Rauf Aregbesola.
