The Federal Government has distributed Information and Communication Technology (ICT) equipment and instructional materials to 15 Colleges of Education across the country as part of efforts to strengthen teacher education, promote digital learning, and improve access to quality education for girls.
The initiative, implemented in partnership with the Government of Japan, UNESCO-International Institute for Capacity Building in Africa (IICBA), and the African Union, forms part of a regional project being executed in six African countries to support continuous, safe, and inclusive education for girls.
Speaking during the handover ceremony in Abuja, the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, said the intervention aligns with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda and key education priorities, including Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), digitalisation, and efforts to reduce the number of out-of-school children.
According to the minister, teachers remain at the heart of education reforms, stressing that investments in their training and professional development are critical to improving learning outcomes nationwide.
She explained that the equipment provided includes laptops, tablets, desktop computers, smart boards, projectors, printers, and storage systems designed to enhance digital teaching and learning in the beneficiary institutions.
Prof. Ahmad also disclosed that the project includes capacity-building programmes aimed at strengthening ICT integration in teaching, promoting inclusive pedagogical practices, and improving school safety.
Representatives of UNESCO-IICBA, the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE), and the Embassy of Japan commended Nigeria’s commitment to advancing teacher development and girls’ education.
They reaffirmed their support for initiatives that promote safe learning environments and improve access to quality education across the country.
The Federal Ministry of Education urged the beneficiary institutions to ensure effective utilisation and maintenance of the facilities to maximize their impact on teacher training and educational development.
The intervention is expected to enhance digital competencies among educators and contribute to the delivery of quality, inclusive, and technology-driven education in Nigeria.
