France captain Kylian Mbappe’s hopes of winning the 2026 Ballon d’Or have suffered a major setback after France crashed out of the FIFA World Cup with a 2-0 semi-final defeat to Spain.
The loss ended France’s quest for the world title and dealt a significant blow to Mbappe’s campaign for football’s most prestigious individual award, despite his impressive tally of eight goals at the tournament.
In contrast, Spain’s teenage sensation Lamine Yamal strengthened his Ballon d’Or credentials with another influential display. The youngster won the penalty that Mikel Oyarzabal converted to open the scoring in the 22nd minute, before Pedro Porro doubled Spain’s advantage in the second half to seal victory.
While Mbappe could still add to his goal tally in the World Cup third-place play-off and challenge for the Golden Boot, Yamal remains in contention for both World Cup glory and the Ballon d’Or.
Spain will now face either Argentina or England in the World Cup final, where Yamal will have another opportunity to enhance his growing reputation and strengthen his case for the 2026 Ballon d’Or.
