Nigeria’s Minister of Education, Maruf Tunji Alausa, has been named Most Innovative Cabinet Minister of the Year 2025 at the Silver Jubilee Awards organised by Independent Newspapers Limited in Lagos.
The award followed a competitive selection process involving cabinet members across sectors, with winners determined through a combination of public voting, independent jury assessment, and editorial board review. The recognition highlights leadership, innovation, and measurable impact in public service.
The Federal Ministry of Education described the honour as a reflection of ongoing reforms in the sector under the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI), which focuses on improving access, quality, equity, and alignment with national development priorities.
Key reforms highlighted include the revitalisation of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), aimed at equipping students with practical skills for employment and entrepreneurship. The Ministry has also expanded investments in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medical Sciences (STEMM), including the rehabilitation of medical schools and engineering faculties in federal institutions.
Other initiatives include the Student Venture Capital Grant, designed to support student-led innovations, and the Nigerian Education Data Infrastructure, a digital system developed to improve data-driven planning, monitoring, and accountability across the education sector.
The Ministry also noted increased efforts to tackle the challenge of out-of-school children, alongside targeted programmes to support girls’ education through scholarships, mentorship, and safer learning environments.
Teachers remain central to the reform agenda, with ongoing investments in training, welfare, and modern teaching tools aimed at improving classroom delivery nationwide.
Reacting to the award, Alausa expressed appreciation to Nigerians and the organisers, noting that the recognition reflects a collective effort to reposition education in the country.
He added that while the honour is significant, it underscores the need to sustain reforms that will deliver long-term impact.
The Ministry said the recognition further strengthens its commitment to advancing education reforms under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, with the goal of building a resilient and future-ready education system.
