The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has formally disassociated itself from a publication by The Guardian Nigeria alleging that 51 universities and other institutions are involved in unauthorised deductions from student loans.
The report, titled “51 Varsities, Others Embroiled in Illegal Deductions from Students’ Loans”, was published on Tuesday, 29 April 2025. In a swift response, NELFUND issued a statement clarifying that it was not consulted for the story and did not provide any data, commentary, or contribution to the report.
“For the avoidance of doubt, NELFUND was neither consulted for this report nor did it provide any data, comment, or contribution to the publication in question,” the Fund stated. “We hereby unequivocally disassociate ourselves from the said article and any inferences that suggest our involvement.”
The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NELFUND, Mr Akintunde Sawyerr, signed the statement, reaffirming the organisation’s commitment to transparency and accurate communication.
“All official information regarding our activities will continue to be disseminated through verified and authorised communication channels,” the statement added.
