The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), has taken a bold step towards strengthening digital safety and awareness, as the University Community played host to the maiden edition of a Campus-wide Cybersecurity Awareness Initiative (CAI), spearheaded by renowned cybersecurity expert, Prof. Adebukola Onashoga.
Held on April 15 and 16, 2026, the impactful two-day programme culminated in the historic unveiling of the FUNAAB CyberTitans, an elite student-driven network set to position the University within Nigeria’s growing league of emerging cybersecurity champions.
The initiative, themed “Pause, Prevent, Protect for a Cyber Safe Culture,” combined dynamic grassroots engagement with a grand finale hosted at the College of Computing Sciences (COLCOMPS) Auditorium 3, attracting an impressive gathering of staff, students, and guests.
In a demonstration of innovation and peer-led advocacy, members of the CyberTitans Planning Committee fanned out across the campus, leading an extensive outreach campaign. Moving through hostels, lecture halls, car parks, and relaxation hubs, the students engaged with the University Community by implementing practical, easy-to-adopt cybersecurity measures, including password protection strategies, phishing awareness, and One-Time Password (OTP) safety. The exercise, reinforced with educational flyers and stickers, ignited widespread conversations and reinforced the message that cybersecurity begins with individual responsibility.
Declaring the grand finale open, Prof. Onashoga underscored the urgency of digital vigilance in today’s interconnected world, noting that “cybersecurity is no longer optional; it is the oxygen of our digital lives.” Her remarks set a compelling tone for the high-level discourse that followed.
Delivering a thought-provoking goodwill message, Prof. Adesina Agboola captivated participants with an impromptu mathematics exercise, illustrating the intrinsic link between mathematical reasoning and cybersecurity expertise. He challenged students to deploy analytical thinking in identifying and mitigating cyber threats, describing mathematics as the intellectual backbone of the discipline.
Also speaking, the Deputy Dean, Student Affairs Division, Dr. Mathew Wheto, commended the students’ proactive involvement, noting that their initiative reflects a growing culture of responsibility and leadership among FUNAAB students. He assured participants of sustained institutional support for future editions.
Renowned cybersecurity scholar, Prof. Adesina Sodiya, further enriched the discourse by emphasising the need for strategic awareness in tackling cyber threats. According to him, “understanding the threat landscape, knowing your adversary, your assets, and your actions, is fundamental to building resilience in cyberspace.”
The event also featured a virtual presentation by the Guest Speaker, Dr. Oluyomi Asogbon, a Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) and President of GlobalTech, who delivered a compelling analysis of human vulnerability in cybersecurity breaches. He stressed that most cyber incidents originate from simple human errors, urging participants to adopt a culture of caution, regular system updates, and prompt incident reporting.
A major highlight of the event was a captivating stage playlet performed by students, creatively illustrating the dangers of OTP compromise. The performance, which blended humour with critical lessons, resonated strongly with the audience and reinforced key cybersecurity principles in a relatable manner.
Reflecting on the journey, the Students’ Coordinator, Mr. Emmanuel, described the initiative as a transformative experience, crediting Prof. Onashoga’s mentorship for reshaping students’ perspectives on leadership, innovation, and service in technology. Many participating students echoed similar sentiments, expressing renewed interest in cybersecurity as a practical and essential field.
The defining moment of the programme was the official unveiling of the FUNAAB CyberTitans, a strategic move that aligns the University with national efforts to promote peer-driven cybersecurity awareness and collaboration across tertiary institutions.
