Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced a new initiative to train and engage 5,000 young Nigerians as meter installers and technicians under a programme known as The Power Force, as part of efforts to tackle unemployment and close the country’s electricity metering gap.
In a statement, the President said the programme, which will be implemented through the Presidential Metering Initiative, is designed to create jobs, equip young people with practical technical skills and strengthen Nigeria’s electricity sector.
According to him, the initiative forms part of the Renewed Hope Agenda and seeks to address the country’s metering deficit, end estimated billing, protect electricity consumers and improve the efficiency of the power market.
Tinubu said eligible Nigerians who have completed their secondary school education can apply for the programme, while a dedicated quota has been reserved for members of the National Youth Service Corps.
Describing the initiative as one focused on “jobs, skills and dignity,” the President said beneficiaries would be connected to employment opportunities in a sector that impacts homes, businesses and communities across the country.
He explained that increased metering would also improve electricity supply by ensuring consumers pay only for the power they use, while enabling electricity distribution companies to collect revenue more transparently, reduce losses, maintain infrastructure, expand connections and invest in improved service delivery.
The President said he has directed the Presidential Metering Initiative to work with the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, the National Power Training Institute of Nigeria and other relevant stakeholders to commence the programme within the next 30 days.
The application portal will open on July 4, 2026, and interested applicants are expected to register through the Presidential Metering Initiative portal.
Tinubu encouraged eligible young Nigerians to take advantage of the opportunity, urging them to “Join The Power Force, learn a skill, earn with dignity, and help end estimated billing while contributing to Nigeria’s power sector development.”
