President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has asked the Senate to consider and pass the National Senior Secondary Education Commission (Amendment) Bill, 2026, in a move aimed at strengthening the administration and governance of public senior secondary education across the country.
The President’s request was conveyed in a letter read during Thursday’s plenary by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
According to the letter, the proposed amendment was approved by the Federal Executive Council at its meeting of April 30, 2026, and has now been transmitted to the National Assembly for legislative consideration.
Tinubu said the bill seeks to enhance the effectiveness of the National Senior Secondary Education Commission by strengthening its legal and operational framework.
“The purpose of the bill is to strengthen the administration and governance of public senior secondary education in Nigeria,” the President stated.
He noted that the proposed legislation aligns with his administration’s commitment to building stronger educational institutions, improving learning outcomes and advancing national development.
Tinubu also appealed to lawmakers to give the bill accelerated consideration, expressing confidence that its passage would further support ongoing reforms in Nigeria’s education sector.
Following the presentation of the letter, Akpabio referred the bill to the Senate Committee on Rules and Business for legislative processing and directed the committee to report back to the Senate within one week.
The National Senior Secondary Education Commission was established to coordinate the development of public senior secondary education, promote quality standards, provide policy direction and support states through funding interventions and quality assurance mechanisms.
If passed by the National Assembly and signed into law by the President, the amendment is expected to strengthen the commission’s capacity to improve the governance and delivery of senior secondary education nationwide.
