The process of appointing the 14th Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan has commenced.
This follows a call for applications issued through an internal and external advertisement published on Thursday by the university’s Registrar, Ganiyu Saliu.
According to the notice, the position will become vacant on November 1, 2026.
The university’s Governing Council had, at its meeting on March 4, 2026, approved the commencement of the process to appoint a new substantive Vice-Chancellor.
The current Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kayode Adebowale, assumed office on October 14, 2021, for a single, non-renewable five-year term.
His emergence followed a prolonged and contentious selection process.
The position had earlier become vacant on December 1, 2020, but the appointment process was suspended due to widespread agitations, which led to the dissolution of the governing council at the time.
A new Governing Council, chaired by Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, was inaugurated in April 2021 to restart the process, culminating in Adebowale’s appointment.
The latest advertisement outlines the criteria for prospective candidates.
Applicants must not be more than 65 years old by November 1, 2026, the expected date of assumption of duty.
Candidates are also required to be distinguished scholars at the rank of professor, with at least 10 years’ experience at that level.
In addition, the notice states that applicants must demonstrate the capacity to provide both academic and administrative leadership.
“The candidate must be a person of proven integrity; command the respect of the national and international academic communities through his/her track record; strengthen the bridges between staff, students and other members of the university community,” the statement read.
It further emphasised that the candidate must possess a clear vision for the university’s development, be in excellent physical and mental health, and have the ability to attract funding to the institution.
