The University of Lagos has welcomed a two-person Resource Verification Panel from the National Universities Commission to assess its readiness to commence a new Bachelor of Science in Development Studies.
The NUC panel visited the university on Monday, August 17, 2026, as part of the process for assessing the proposed programme, which will be domiciled in the Department of Economics, Faculty of Social Sciences.
Speaking on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Development Services, Professor Foluso Afolabi Lesi, said the visit reflected the university’s commitment to maintaining academic standards and ensuring that it was fully prepared for the programme.
Lesi said UNILAG welcomed external assessments as an opportunity to meet regulatory requirements and reaffirm its academic standards.
The NUC team was led by Professor Kalu Ebi Uma of Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike, alongside Mr Udoh Nnah of the Commission.
According to Lesi, the Department of Economics and the Directorate of Academic Planning had worked to ensure that the proposed programme aligned with the NUC Benchmark Minimum Academic Standards.
He added that at least 30 per cent of the programme’s curriculum would align with industry practice and national development priorities, with the aim of equipping graduates with relevant professional competencies.
The NUC panel subsequently inspected facilities including staff offices, lecture halls and library resources.
Following the assessment, Nnah commended UNILAG for its level of preparation, noting that only a minor observation concerning ancillary facilities in some senior staff offices was identified.
He recommended that the university address the observation ahead of accreditation.
Responding on behalf of the university management, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academics and Research, Professor Matthew Olusoji Ilori, thanked the panel for its feedback and assured the team that the university would continue to maintain appropriate working environments for its staff.
The verification exercise ended with the panel expressing optimism that the assessment would support the successful accreditation and commencement of the B.Sc. Development Studies programme.
