The Federal Government has directed all public universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education to publish their yearly financial statements and academic performance reports starting from the first quarter of every year.
It warned that any institution that fails to comply risks losing access to TETFund interventions.
Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, announced this on Tuesday in Abuja while launching the Federal Tertiary Institution Governance and Transparency Platform (FTIGTP) — a new initiative designed to promote openness, accountability, and data-driven decision-making in Nigeria’s tertiary education sector.
Alausa said the platform aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s push for transparency in public institutions, stressing that future funding and support will depend on how transparent schools are.
He also assured that the Federal Government would no longer allow public universities to be shut down due to labour disputes.
“The President has mandated us that he doesn’t want ASUU to go on strike. We are doing everything possible to ensure students stay in school,” Alausa said.
He added that the government is holding ongoing talks with ASUU to ensure lasting peace in the sector.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Committee of Vice Chancellors of Nigerian Universities (CVCNU), Prof. Tanko Ishaya, commended the move, calling it a bold step that matches global standards in university governance.
Alausa further revealed that the government is working with the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) to reform the procurement process and connect all tertiary institutions to high-speed broadband via the Nigerian Research and Education Network (NG-REN) by 2026.
He said the reforms are part of a wider plan to make Nigeria’s education system more transparent, efficient, and digitally driven.
