The Nigerian Universities Ranking Advisory Committee says it will carry out a fresh, nationwide ranking of universities in October 2026.
The Chairman of the Committee and former Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Emeritus Prof. Peter Okebukola, revealed this in an interview with our correspondent in Abuja on Wednesday.
This comes shortly after the Times Higher Education released its 2026 global university rankings.
In the new THE ranking, the University of Ibadan reclaimed its position as Nigeria’s best university, placing between 801 and 1,000 globally. The ranking assessed 2,191 institutions across 115 countries, using 18 indicators covering teaching, research environment, research quality, industry engagement, and international outlook.
UI rose from fourth place last year to number one, ahead of the University of Lagos, Bayero University, and Covenant University.
Speaking on Nigeria’s own ranking exercise, Okebukola said preparations were already underway and that the committee had encountered “no bottlenecks so far.”
He added that NURAC members met on October 16, 2025, to review Nigeria’s performance in the 2026 global rankings and agreed to send an Aide Mémoire to the NUC and the Minister of Education on how to improve both rankings and the overall quality of university education.
The last national ranking was done in 2021, with UI topping the chart, followed by Redeemer’s University and Covenant University.
