Globally renowned writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has dismissed reports claiming she was appointed a Visiting Professor at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN).
Adichie refuted the claim in a statement issued on Wednesday by her communications team and signed by Omawumi Ogbe, describing the reports as false.
According to the statement, Adichie neither received any appointment letter nor engaged in discussions with UNN regarding a visiting professorship.
“Ms. Adichie has not received any such appointment, nor has she been in communication with the University regarding a professorship,” the statement said.
The statement also debunked claims that official letters dated December 18, 2025, were issued to her, stressing that such reports were inaccurate.
While noting that UNN holds a special place in Adichie’s life—having grown up on the campus where her parents served as Professor and Registrar—the statement expressed disappointment that the claim was circulated without verification.
Her communications team urged the public and media organisations to disregard the reports and called on outlets carrying the story to take them down immediately to prevent further spread of misinformation.
The denial followed an earlier announcement by UNN that it had appointed Adichie alongside African Development Bank executive, Prof. Kevin Urama, and University of Chicago scholar, Prof. James Robinson, as Visiting Professors.
The institution said the appointments, approved by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Simon Ortuanya, were aimed at repositioning the university on the global academic stage.
