The Federal University Gashua (FUGashua), Yobe State, has a new Vice-Chancellor — and with him comes a promise of consolidation, research growth and stronger academic standards.
Professor Yaqub Geidam has officially assumed office as the fourth substantive Vice-Chancellor of the institution, pledging to build on existing achievements and reposition the university for greater impact.
His appointment was approved by the university’s Governing Council at a statutory meeting presided over by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Ibrahim Usman.
According to a statement signed by the Head of Information and Protocol Unit, Mallam Adamu Saleh, the appointment followed a rigorous, merit-based selection process conducted in line with the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act and other extant regulations.
Speaking during the handover ceremony held on Wednesday at the university’s 1,000-capacity lecture hall, Geidam expressed appreciation to the Governing Council and the university community.
“I am grateful for the trust placed in me and fully aware of the responsibilities that come with this office. Together, we will build on the solid foundation already laid and move this university to greater heights,” he said.
He outlined key priorities for his administration, including strengthening academic standards, promoting research and innovation, improving staff welfare, expanding infrastructure and driving overall institutional growth.
For students, that could translate into better learning facilities, stronger academic structures and more opportunities for research engagement.
Geidam, a professor of Veterinary Medicine with over two decades of experience, previously served as Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Maiduguri and held several administrative positions.
The outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Professor Maimuna Waziri, thanked staff and students for their support during her tenure and urged them to extend the same cooperation to her successor.
She formally handed over the instruments of office to Geidam, marking the official transition.
The ceremony was attended by principal officers, management staff, deans, directors, heads of departments, students and other dignitaries — signalling the beginning of a new chapter for the Yobe-based university.
