Lagos, Nigeria — March 12, 2026: The management of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has reassured students, staff, and the general public that the institution is not on strike, following widespread concerns triggered by an earlier announcement from the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), UNILAG Chapter.
In an official statement released on Thursday, the university explained that the industrial action previously planned by the union was suspended before it could take effect. According to the statement, the strike had initially been scheduled to begin on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, but the decision was reversed on Tuesday, March 10, 2026.
The clarification comes after a wave of phone calls, messages, and public inquiries from members of the university community and concerned stakeholders seeking confirmation about the status of academic activities at the institution.
Academic Activities Ongoing
The university emphasized that teaching, learning, and administrative operations have continued without disruption. In particular, the First Semester Examinations for the 2025/2026 academic session are currently underway as scheduled.
Management stressed that students should continue with their academic responsibilities and attend all examinations and lectures as planned.
Issues Under Discussion
Although the strike has been suspended, the concerns raised by ASUU’s UNILAG chapter remain under discussion. University authorities noted that the issues are being addressed by management within the limits of the institution’s available resources.
Constructive dialogue and consultations between the university leadership and the union are reportedly ongoing in order to resolve the matters in a manner that protects the interests of both staff and students.
Management Appeals for Cooperation
The university expressed appreciation for the patience and understanding shown by members of the university community, stakeholders, and the general public during the period of uncertainty.
Management also called for continued cooperation and support as discussions with the union progress, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a stable and productive academic environment.
Official Statement
The statement was signed by Adejoke R. Alaga-Ibraheem, Head of the Communication Unit, on behalf of the University of Lagos Management.
University officials reiterated their commitment to ensuring that academic activities proceed smoothly while engaging with staff representatives to address their concerns.
For now, the university community has been advised to disregard rumours of a strike and continue normal academic operations.
