Authorities at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, have clarified why a proposed lecture by Peter Obi could not hold on campus, citing procedural and security concerns.
In a statement released by the university, officials said the invitation to the former presidential candidate was initiated by a group within the student body. However, the institution only became fully aware of the high-profile nature of the guest a day before the scheduled event.
The university explained that visits by prominent public figures require advance notice to allow for proper planning, including logistics and security coordination with agencies such as the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services.
Due to the short notice, OAU said it was unable to make the necessary arrangements, leading to the decision not to approve the use of Oduduwa Hall, the proposed venue for the lecture.
University management emphasized that the decision was based solely on safety considerations and compliance with institutional guidelines, not on any disregard for Obi’s status. The statement noted that the university holds the former Anambra State governor in high esteem.
Vice-Chancellor Adebayo Simeon Bamire reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to hosting intellectual engagements and notable personalities, provided that due process is followed.
The university also urged students and organizers to adhere to established procedures when planning events, stressing that proper coordination is essential to ensuring safety and order on campus.
