As Nigeria marks the 2026 Children’s Day celebration, the National Librarian and Chief Executive Officer of the National Library of Nigeria, Prof. Chinwe Anunobi, has urged children and young people across the country to cultivate the habit of reading, describing books as powerful tools for self-development, leadership, and personal growth.
In her goodwill message to commemorate the celebration, Anunobi congratulated Nigerian children on a day set aside to celebrate their innocence, potential, and place as the future of the nation.
She described reading as a pathway to knowledge, opportunity, and empowerment, encouraging young Nigerians to embrace it as a lifelong habit capable of shaping their future.
“Reading opens doors to knowledge, opportunity, and leadership,” Prof. Anunobi said. “When you read, you equip yourself with the ideas, skills, and confidence to shape your future and contribute meaningfully to our country. Let this Children’s Day remind us that every great leader, inventor, and changemaker started with a book.”
The National Librarian also reassured Nigerian youth that the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, alongside education policies introduced by the Minister of Education, are expanding opportunities for formal and non-formal learning across the country.
According to her, the policies are designed to ensure that every Nigerian child, regardless of background or location, has access to quality education and the support needed to pursue their dreams.
Anunobi encouraged children and young people to take advantage of platforms provided by the National Library of Nigeria, including its nationwide network of book clubs, literacy centres, and physical and digital learning resources.
She stressed the importance of reading materials about Nigeria’s history, culture, languages, personalities, and achievements to help young people better understand their heritage and prepare for the future.
“The National Library of Nigeria remains committed to being a safe, accessible, and inspiring space for learning. Through our centers and digital platforms, we are bringing books, knowledge, and opportunities closer to you. I urge you to visit us, join a book club, and read widely, especially Nigerian content that tells your story,” she added.
The National Library of Nigeria reaffirmed its commitment to promoting reading culture and lifelong learning in line with national development goals and its 2025–2030 strategic plan, while calling for collective efforts to help children realise their potential through knowledge and learning.
