A 200-level Cyber Security student of Dennis Osadebay University, Asaba, Delta State, Oghenetega Agofure, has shared how the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) helped him continue his university education despite financial difficulties.
Agofure said paying for his education became a major challenge during his first year, forcing him to combine his studies with different jobs and gigs to raise money for his tuition and other academic expenses.
According to him, his situation improved after he learnt about the NELFUND student loan scheme and applied for financial assistance.
> “During my 100 level, funding my academic dream was a big uphill struggle. I had to work between jobs, go for gigs and raise funds for my tuition fee. Then I heard about the NELFUND initiative and keyed into it.”
Agofure said NELFUND subsequently paid his school fees in full when he reached 200 level and also provided him with a monthly upkeep allowance during the semester.
He expressed appreciation to the management of Dennis Osadebay University for participating in the scheme and commended NELFUND Managing Director, Akintunde Sawyerr, for implementing the initiative.
The student also acknowledged the support of Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, and President Bola Tinubu for their backing of the student loan programme.
Describing the intervention as life-changing, Agofure said:
> “This initiative is not just any other kind of initiative. It is helping undergraduates within and around Nigeria to fund their academic dreams. You are keeping dreams alive by doing this.”
He urged stakeholders to sustain and strengthen the scheme, noting that financial assistance could help more students from low-income backgrounds remain in school and achieve their career aspirations.
NELFUND Pays N87.36m to 455 KWASUED Students
Meanwhile, NELFUND has approved and disbursed N87.36 million to 455 students of the Kwara State University of Education (KWASUED), Ilorin, under the Federal Government’s student loan scheme.
The university disclosed this in a letter of appreciation dated June 25, 2026, signed by its Registrar, Mohammed Jibril.
The institution thanked NELFUND for the intervention, saying the funding would reduce the financial burden on beneficiaries and support them in pursuing their education.
KWASUED described the disbursement as evidence of NELFUND’s commitment to expanding access to higher education in Nigeria and expressed its willingness to continue working with the Fund to advance educational development.
The latest interventions highlight the growing role of NELFUND in helping Nigerian students overcome financial barriers to tertiary education.
