Covenant University has dismissed allegations of negligence surrounding the death of one of its final-year students, Jesutunmise Toluwase, stating that the incident was caused by a previously undisclosed heart condition.
In an official statement released by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Timothy Anake, the institution explained that the student had taken part in a football training session on campus on Monday, April 6, 2026. After complaining of leg pain and fatigue, he reportedly stepped aside to rest.
Moments later, his teammates noticed he was struggling to breathe and quickly rushed him to the university’s Medical Centre, located close to the playing field. However, he had reportedly stopped breathing before arriving at the facility.
Medical personnel immediately attempted to revive him using cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and an automated external defibrillator (AED), but all efforts proved unsuccessful. He was subsequently pronounced dead, with the cause linked to an undisclosed underlying heart condition.
The university emphasized that there was no delay or deficiency in medical response, maintaining that all necessary procedures and equipment were promptly deployed.
University officials, including the Vice Chancellor, were said to have remained at the Medical Centre throughout the incident and stayed with the family until burial arrangements were concluded.
The institution extended its condolences to the bereaved family, describing the loss as a tragedy not only for the university community but for society at large.
