A state of fear has gripped communities in Sudan’s Northern State following the Rapid Support Forces’ (RSF) seizure of the strategic border triangle connecting Sudan, Libya, and Egypt. The RSF also captured Karb El Toum, a vital area located over 500 kilometres from several major cities in the region.
According to the Supreme Council for the Development of the Sukut Area, this development has led to widespread panic, the closure of schools, and the displacement of residents in West Sukut. Videos circulating on social media show RSF fighters threatening to advance into other parts of the state.
The council assured the public that military units would withdraw from villages to prevent civilian contact. However, it also accused unknown actors of encouraging evacuations to facilitate looting and intimidate traders in local markets and gold mining zones.
Meanwhile, the armed forces launched pre-emptive operations, including airstrikes targeting RSF positions. Suicide drone attacks were also reported in Merowe Dam (Northern State) and Atbara (River Nile State), marking a resurgence in hostilities after a brief lull following army gains in Omdurman.
Authorities have raised concerns over misinformation campaigns on social media allegedly aimed at undermining the army and provoking civilian unrest.
