Huawei has surged back to the top of China’s smartphone market for the first time in over four years, outpacing global rival Apple and local competitors like Xiaomi, according to new data released by the International Data Corporation (IDC).
The Shenzhen-based technology giant captured an impressive 18.1% share of the Chinese smartphone market in the second quarter of 2024, with 12.5 million units shipped, IDC revealed on Tuesday. The achievement marks a major comeback for Huawei, which has endured a series of setbacks including U.S. export restrictions, widespread Western bans, and a recent corruption probe in Belgium.
This recovery underscores Huawei’s resilience and growing dominance in China, despite global headwinds.
Meanwhile, the broader Chinese smartphone market experienced a 4% year-on-year decline, dropping to 69 million units in Q2 2024. This dip ends a streak of six consecutive quarters of growth and reflects ongoing economic pressures and consumer caution.
Huawei’s resurgence is seen as a strategic victory not only in regaining consumer trust but also in navigating geopolitical and regulatory challenges, especially those imposed by the United States and its allies.
